Stronger through Adversity?

So let's see,
Pater had the boat taken in for its annual motor check-up and conditioning and found that the (saltwater) corrosion noted last year had accelerated and it was time to replace. So we've done that, but let me tell you that 50hp. 4-strokes are not cheap. Not. Added for clarification: Ours is a commuter boat, for getting back and forth from our island home to town where we work and shop and connect with the rest of the world.

Then we took the taxes to the accountant, pleased that we were organized enough to get them done before leaving, since they have to be filed just as we're getting back home. Turns out that in the switch from regular paycheques to pension, $5000 too little had been withheld from Pater's cheques. So we need to come up with that $5000 before we return. Meanwhile, we'll be spending, not saving!

My union began strike action today, after months and months and months of hoping the employer might at least come to the bargaining table eventually. Because my Research Leave had begun before the work stoppage, I will continue to be paid my 70%. Although this obviously helps keep the bank account afloat, it doesn't ease my guilt or my worry for my colleagues. Not to mention my concern about an increasingly adversarial and demoralizing workplace.  However, all reports are that the first day's picketing was marked by impressive solidarity, including many students who came to show their support for what faculty are doing. Note that we are not striking for more wages, nor are we absolutely insistent that there be no layoffs at all. But we do want to have an important Financial Exigency Clause, standard at most universities, which sets out the conditions under which cuts be made and the way those are made in order to preserve academic integrity. Otherwise, of course, any notion of tenure becomes, well, un-tenable.

I would have been standing alongside the picket lines in solidarity today, except that I just found out that an old friend I never see anymore -- do you have those? people with whom you absolutely connect, with whom you share a history, values, interests, can natter on for hours if you bump into each other, but with whom you don't deliberately arrange visits? -- has been diagnosed, after years of encroaching symptoms, either ignored, or explained away, with a degenerative, likely terminal, neurological disease. As soon as I heard this, I was determined to visit G. before we went away, given that seven weeks could take her further down the path she's on. I haven't seen her for at least two years, and I was shocked at the change. Parkinsonism prevails, she's shrunken and swollen, her eyes somewhat fixed, she explained, by the neurology. But we had a wonderful visit. Her passionate intellect, her open, engaging warmth, her absolute lack of self-pity, her still-intact sense of humour and her ability to be fabulously outrageous -- all still there, if slowed down because of speech impairment.  Because she can't quite trust her body anymore, she's not getting out much, and she misses the intellectual stimulation of lectures, art galleries, concerts, and good old arguments more than anything else.

In the face of G's challenges, the difficulties of this week, mainly financial, after all, are negligible (although her celebration of an intellectual life strengthened my resolve to stand in solidarity with my colleagues against an ever-swelling university administration adoption of a Corporate model).  Her challenges not only remind me of my obvious good fortune, but they remind me that such fortune is tenuous. Rather than weaken its value, this fragility demands that fortune be grasped while it can -- and that it be shared.  The dark shadow of G's illness will encroach on my time in Europe, I know.  Afternoon glasses of red wine will be interrupted with a memory that she suffers. But if we have that time left to us, I will visit her when I get back and regale her with stories and pictures. And thank her for reminding me, for letting me see through eyes that hurt, thus treasure . . .

Research and development teams at Mitsubishi have been working on building a car that can combine a green personality with a high performance demeanor. The Mitsubishi RA concept car is the result of such an endeavor. The RA was built to utilize clean diesel technology without sacrificing adrenaline producing performance. Like most concept cars, it’s extreme in it’s design and aspirations, but worth taking a look at.

Drive train wise the RA concept car is comparable to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. It features Super-All-Wheel-Control (S-AWC), which helped make the Evolution a winning rally car capable of maneuvering over the roughest terrain. Included in this system is stability control which is capable of adjusting torque and braking to help maintain a straight line. When all components are working together it provides maximum traction, control, cornering, and vehicle stabilization.

Powering the RA concept car is a 2.2 liter 4 banger 16 valve turbo diesel engine. To achieve it’s high efficiency while maintaining performance attributes, the engine features Mitsubishi’s MIVEC that offers constant variable valve timing control. The small liter engine is capable of producing just over 200 horsepower, but an amazing 300 ft lb of torque. This high torque engine, coupled with the light weight design of the RA, makes for performance you can feel in the seat of your pants. Consider this, the RA’s engine produces more torque than the 4.6 liter V8 found in the 2010 Ford Mustang.

Exterior wise, the RA concept car reminds me of the legendary Eclipse. What sets this Mitsubishi apart is it’s diesel engine and full time all wheel drive. It’s like Mitsubishi took the best parts of the Lancer Evolution and mated it with the sexy body lines of the latest generation Eclipse. They even went so far as to add Lambo Doors, just like many after market car enthusiasts do to customize their rides.
No indication has been made that the RA Concept Car will actually be produced, but its a great platform to build upon. Any research and development done to further performance and efficiency deserves everyone’s attention

Prior Design Mercedes-Benz SL R230 PD Series

Prior Design revealed their most recent work just in time for the industry trade fair “Tuning World Bodensee”. For your approval and consideration: we present the PD-Series based on the Mercedes-Benz SL R230.
The goal of the Kamp-Lintfort company was to transform the seemingly bulky Mercedes-Benz SL R230 into something more ideal and appealing. Thus, they came up with a design clearly inspired by the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series. This new aesthetic package for the SL R230 is comprised of a smooth and sleek form, huge air intakes and powerfully built sides to impress every enthusiast to date.

Looking at specific elements, let’s start with the front of the vehicle. The first thing that will catch any viewer’s eye is the incomparable breadth of the vehicle granted by the awe-inspiring size of the fenders. From the fender of the car, the eyes are drawn to the front area using smooth lines. After examining the facelift headlights equipped on the car, the viewer will then notice a front mounted spoiler with big, imposing air intakes. The hood is also equipped with several air intakes reaching up into the windshield, supplying much needed air to racing tuned engines.
Large rims making up the side area of the car give the vehicle an intimidating look commanding recognition. Side skirts are expertly placed to connect the sides making it seem as if the entire body work of the vehicle was made to form a single piece.

Checking out the car further will inevitably bring the viewer to the rear of the car, where the curve of the fenders gives an impression that the SL R230 is incredibly broad and spacious. The two rear fenders are connected by a flawlessly contoured rear bumper, where one can find a diffuser available either in full or slight carbon fiber.
A unique wheel tire combination set has been custom-made for PD series. Each rim is made from a three-part stainless steel outer bed with a black finish. The two front tires are measure 10x20 inches with 265/30 R20, while the rear tires measure 12x20 inches with 305/25 R20.
Suspension settings can be fully customized by the driver, mechanically or electronically, using an incorporated Airmatic system.

Hulme CanAm Bear 1 Test Car

The Hulme CanAm is named after Denny Hulme, New Zealand’s racing prodigy and F1 World Champion. It is the only road-legal supercar to carry the name of an F1 Champion, and it doesn’t disappoint. The vehicle is said to achieve speeds of above 200 mph, and comes in the form of a high-performance mid-engine roadster. The car is intended for use both in open roads and the racetrack, combining raw power, outstanding craftsmanship, extraordinary performance, and is guaranteed to provide any driver with an exhilarating driving experience.

Under the hood of the Hulme CanAm is a 7-liter Chevrolet LS7 V8 Engine, producing a monstrous 600 horsepower balanced out by 600 Nm of torque. Control for this whopping amount of power is accomplished via a close-ratio, six-speed CIMA manual transmission, where paddle or sequential transmission is also an option. Due to the construction of the vehicle, the car weighs less than a ton, and 600 hp for a lightweight car means that the Hulme CanAm can accelerate from 0 to 100Kph in less than three and a half seconds.
Despite the incomparable performance values of the vehicle, the guiding principle maintained by Hulme engineers in designing the car has been to focus on driving enjoyment. Power distribution and aerodynamics maximize the car’s handling on either the road or a racetrack. The Hulme Can Am is developed and hand-crafted by the Hulme technology team, and their design paid off in granting the car a lightweight carbon composite chassis and body, along with racing tuned suspension and braking.

Each Hulme CanAm Bear 1 Test Car costs a deposit of £10,000 for an option to order. An enthusiast would want to take note of the fact that only 20 of these supercars from New Zealand will be put into production. The managing director of Hulme, Jock Freemantle, guarantees that the deposit is fully refundable if the option is not escalated into an order, or if the order for this supercar is not satisfied. Before the car is introduced at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed, a private viewing and test drive will be made available to those who have purchased an option to order the vehicle. If the potential buyer is not satisfied and wants to cancel the option to order, his funds will be immediately refunded

G-Power BMW M3 GT2 S and the M3 Tornado CS

Performance wise, both modified BMWs rely on the same SK II S supercharged V8 engine. This engine produces 600 horsepower at 7800 rpm, and 580 Nm of torque at 5300 rpm. Both vehicles clock in at a top speed of 320 Km/h, or 205 mph, through a 6-speed manual transmission.

There are slight differences for the acceleration values of both vehicles. The BMW M3 Tornado CS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, while the BMW M3 GT2 S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. The M3 Tornado CS can accelerate from 0 to 200 in 11.8 seconds.
Looking at the body work, the GT2 S is equipped with a carbon fiber body kit. The front, rear and side skirts along with all four fenders covering the front and rear wheels are modified and replace and changed into carbon fiber parts to reduce the overall weight of the car. Additionally, a front and rear mounted carbon fiber spoiler improves the vehicle’s aerodynamic potential. On the other hand, a hood mounted carbon spoiler and a rear carbon diffuser on the M3 Tornado CS compensate for the spoilers equipped on the GT2 S, helping the M3 Tornado CS achieve greater down-force.

There is also a difference in the rims and tires equipped between the two BMWs. G-Power decided to use forged Silverstone Clubsport alloy rims on the Tornado CS, measuring 9x20 inches in the front and 10.5x20 inches in the rear. For the GT2 S, G-Power went along with using Silverstone RS forged rims with measurements of 9x20 inches for the front and 11.5x20 inches for the rear. The Tornado CS uses a set of Michelin Pilot Sport tires, while the GT2 S is equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

GTA Spano

The 2010 GTA Spano features a glass roof. This innovative feature is complimented by a unique lighting and opaqueness system. The chassis of the vehicle is made from a combination of carbon fiber, titanium and Kevlar. The car’s composition and general form is inspired by aeronautic technology. It is equipped with a rear mounted 8-liter supercharged V10 engine producing an outrageous 780 horsepower, kept in check using a six speed sequential manual transmission or a semi-automatic paddle shift transmission similar to those used in F1 racecars. These features make the GTA Spano the fastest, road legal automobile in Spain, since it can accelerate from 0 to 100 Km/h in just 2.9 seconds, achieving a top speed of over 350 Km/h. An AP Racing Carbon-Ceramic braking system is equipped on the vehicle. This includes a forced ventilation system, 6 piston brake calipers and an ABS system.

GTA Motors wanted a concept that emulated competitiveness, uniqueness and sophistication. They wanted to design a car that has not been seen to date. Their aim to produce such a revolutionary automobile certainly paid off.
Examining the side of the car, one can see that the doors fit flawlessly into the air intakes. Also, the doors do not have handles and access into the vehicle is achieved by pressing the GTA logo. This layout assists in aerodynamics and lowers the temperature of certain parts of the car such as power steering, brakes and oil coolers to name a few.

The front of the car dictates a strong and smooth image, observed from the huge side-mounted air intakes and its rounded hood. The rear of the car is characterized primarily with the use of glass, which improves air flow under the car and cools down the engine. There are two additional air intakes at the rear and the vehicle uses a twin muffler system, highlighting the vehicle’s racing capabilities. A set of four custom-made, angled rims are mounted around the car; 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear using Pirelli P Zero tires. Only 99 units of this supercar will be produced and exclusively distributed.

Porsche, in their Press Release, introduced a new, efficient, high-performance, medium engine, low-emission, and hybrid sports car- the 918 Spyder. The prototype of this model is fused with the latest breakthroughs in technology. Also, it answers the demands of today’s society.

First off, the 918 Spyder is an environmental friendly vehicle having a very low emission rate. After consuming three liters of fuel, the car emits only 70 grams per kilometer of Carbon dioxide. Indeed, it shows that Porsche is not lagging behind in terms of hybrid technology.

Then, it has one of the fastest accelerations. Although the 918 Spyder only has a medium sized engine, it performs as well as those with large engines.
From rest, the car can go up to a hundred kilometers per hour in just 3.2 seconds with a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour; running at a speed which is even faster than most sports cars, even Porsche’s own Carrera GT.

The inspiration behind the sports car’s name and design is the Pandion haliaetus. This sea hawk, commonly known as the Osprey, lives near the coast and preys on fishes.

The 2010 Bertone Alfa Romeo Pandion Concept boasts of its unique ‘Skin and Frame’ body design that perfectly blends elegance and technology together. The ‘skin’, which is the snake in the logo, represents the seductive and magnificent form of this Italian masterpiece, while the ‘frame’, which refers to the cross, represents the mechanical excellence of the car. The interior of this exreme sports car is another sight to behold. The design of the two front chairs resembles chaise-lounges that are incredibly thin and possess carbon fiber shells that mimic the exterior of the car. The whole interior seems to be floating in mid-air creating a ‘zero-gravity’ ambiance.

GeigerCars Ford Mustang Shelby GT

Dubbed as the ‘American muscle car’, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT made its mark when American racing legend, Carroll Shelby, drove this car showcasing its tremendous power and aggressiveness. The latest version of this memorable vehicle is the 2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 equipped with a 5.4-liter V8 engine with 540 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque.

With these already impressive specifications, Karl Geiger, a Munich-based US car specialist, went a step further and showed how some small modifications can produce a breathtaking transformation. Engineers at GeigerCars worked on the American muscle car and added a 3.3-liter compressor to its 5.4-liter aluminum engine block to increase pressure. With larger throttle valves, a larger Whipple supercharger, an upgraded modified injection system and machined cylinder heads, the 2010 GeigerCars Ford Mustang Shelby GT’s output is now an incredible 799 hp with a 697 lb-ft torque. So that the car can cope up with the extra horsepower, Geiger added extra coolers for the coolant, engine oil and charge air to ensure that temperatures inside the engine do not spiral out of control. The six-speed transmission was also reinforced and the car was fitted with a 3 disc carbon clutch.

In order to improve handling, engineers at GeigerCars also fitted the car with a special racing chassis, a chrome-moly steel Panhard rod, some polyurethane bushes, and reinforced, adjustable trailing arms to improve the stability of the rear axle.

Pagani Zonda Tricolore

In honor of the National Aerobatic Team, Frecce Tricolori, who is celebrating their 50th anniversary, Horacio Pagani unveiled his latest masterpiece, the 2010 Pagani Zonda Tricolore, as a tribute to this nine-plus-one demonstration team of the Italian Air Force. The team is based at Rivolto Air Force Base in the province of Udine. They will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in September 11 and 12 of 2010.

This exquisite piece of work is powered by a Mercedes Benz AMG 7.3-liter V-12 engine that delivers 670 horsepower and has a torque of 780 Nm. Pagani spared no expense in building the car. The body is mostly built of titanium, carbon fiber and magnesium, and is painted navy blue with red, green and white stripes running down the hood. It also boasts of a six-speed sequential gearbox by Cima which is robotized by Automac engineering, and carbo-ceramic self-ventilated brakes by Brembo. The 2010 Pagani Zonda Tricolore’s wheels and interior are both an impressive sight, with the former painted bright gold and the latter a cool green.

With the tremendous amount of power packed in this beautiful car, Horacio Pagani says that his masterpiece can move from 0 to 100 km in about 3.4 seconds and 0 to 200 km in approximately 9.6.

Edo Competition Aston Martin DBS

The 2010 Aston Martin DBS is a luxury sports car equipped with a 6.0-liter V-12 engine that produces an impressive 517 hosepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. This exquisite piece of work is capable of going on a speed of 300 km/hr or 186 mph.

Edo competition, however, declared their intention to increase the Aston Martin DBS’ specifications even higher. It was a challenge, yes, but one they pursued with determination. At the end of it all, they emerged victorious. Engineers at Edo competition modified the Engine Control Unit of this British wondercar via a software recalibration. They also added in special catalytic converters, a new high performance exhaust system, and an upgraded air-flow system, successfully increasing the car’s output from 517 hp to a whopping 550 hp. The torque was also increased to 442 ft-lb. In order to document the true power produced by the car after the modification, Edo competition used a dynamometer throughout the whole process to verify and calibrate results.

The high performance exhaust system which was made especially for the Aston martin DBS has butterfly valves and a programmeable exhaust control system that monitors backpressure and provides the car with good torque without wasting top end horsepower even when one is driving at low speeds. Edo competition also added sports suspension to this luxury sports car for more comfort and a new high performance brake system for added safety. The result: a highly impressive and safe 2010 Edo Competition Aston Martin DBS.
