The Best New 2011 BMW S 1000 RR

There were a number of those who doubted Peter de Waal, vice president of BMW Motorrad USA, when he uttered these sentiments in April in connection with the company's new S 1000 RR, but I think the Bavarian manufacturer of motorcycles come through his promise of attractive prices for their latest Superbike. The Commando 961SE was the first machine to be launched by the new Norton Motorcycles (UK) Ltd. in April 2010. Just 200 examples of the 961SE were built as a limited edition signature series with many added extras.

The design was developed from Kenny Dreer's Commando 952, but in particular features a new engine from designers and builders MCT. The engine is a 961cc pushrod parallel twin producing around 80HP. This machine is also fitted with carbon fibre wheels and Ohlins shock absorbers and although it could be said to retain some of the overall look of the original Commando is packed with modern components and design features.

I so desperately wanted to like Norton’s new 961 range. After all, the Commandos of the past are among the most desirable vintage motorcycles in the world: sleek and sexy, and with some of the best frame engineering of all time. The specs of the new 961 are impeccable, with Öhlins suspension, a top of the line Brembo braking system, just the right amount of power, and a dry weight of 188 kg. But there’s something about the 961 that is totally not doing it for me—and this new Café Racer variant hasn’t changed that. Road tests will no doubt extol the virtues of the 961′s handling, but the styling is nothing less than awful.

Similar to the Café Racer, the 961 Sport features its own variation on shock absorbers, has no fly screen and has the conventional 961 exhaust system. The colours available will be as for the Café Racer. A prototype of a dual seat version will be on display at the November 2010 motorcycle show at the National Exhibition Centre in England

The tank looks too big. The side panel is fussy, and it neither blends nor contrasts with the curves of the seat/tail unit. There’s a yawning, inelegant gap between the rear tire and fender. And the yellow color of the publicity bike is simply offensive. The 961 Café Racer will retail for £13,495 in the UK, which is US$22,500—almost double the price of a Ducati SportClassic GT1000, and heading into MV Agusta F4 territory.

The Piaggio Liberty is an agile, lightweight high-wheeled scooter that is used for delivery services by local authorities and companies in over ten European Countries.A scooter fleet of over 60,000 Liberty - a high number for the two-wheeled sector - is used, among others, by the Postal services in France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.With success to support it, the 2011 Piaggio Liberty e-Mail is now available with a brand new and evolutionary electric powered motor.

The electric unit is 2.6 kW (with the possibility to switch between to control mappings - "Long Range" and "Power", plus reverse gear) and guarantees performances comparable to 4-valve 50 cc 4-stroke internal combustion engines.But with zero level of polluting and noise emissions, a characteristic that makes it the ideal vehicle for delivery services in historic city centers, Limited Traffic Zones and strict "zero emission" only zones.

Italian Piaggio has released a popular model scooter Liberty – “for girls” edition. Machine received the designation Piaggio Liberty “Elle”.Execution of Liberty Elle will be available for modifications Liberty 50 4-Stroke and Liberty 125.

Several components have been specially adapted for women, such as the narrower handlebars, a seat post which is 2 cm shorter and the Ergon handlebar grips with ergonomic handling surface. The "Comfort Edition" is available in frame heights S (45 cm) and M (48 cm).

The “Sport Edition” for men comes in S (47 cm), M (50 cm) and also in frame height L (53 cm), with the components modified accordingly. The monochrome colour scheme in anthracite accentuates the bike's masculine appearance.

Individual tuning with oil-air suspension strut
The four-link rear suspension can cope with the toughest demands, providing superior motion on virtually any terrain. Crucial for perfect control is the position of the pivots, based on sophisticated calculations taking into account all relevant dynamic riding factors such as the influence of the drive system and braking.

The bike's technical components are impressively adaptable. For example, the extremely sensitive response of the rear wheel's high-tech Rock Shox Monarch 3.1 damper opens up completely new possibilities for cyclists wanting to tune their suspension to their individual requirements. Instead of the conventional steel suspension it uses an individually adjustable air chamber –similar to the principle of AIRMATIC in Mercedes-Benz's S-Class. The different air pressures allow significantly more flexible adjustments. The damping is controlled by an adjustable oil cycle, and the rebound stage (upward deflection speed) and compression stage (downward deflection speed) can be set independently.

The suspension and damping of the front wheel is handled by the Rock Shox Recon 335 suspension fork with 120 mm travel. Its rebound and compression stagescan be individually adjusted by riders according to their personal preferences. If required, they can lock out the damping unit completely to enable them to use their strength more efficiently on steep climbs. The aluminium crown and magnesium lower legs guarantee a low overall weight.

Excellent brakes and high-quality components
No cyclist depends more on their brakes than a mountain bikeron a steep descent on loose surface covering. That's why Mercedes-Benz uses fully hydraulic Avid Juicy Five disc brakes, which have received top reviews in the technical press, at the front and in the back for its new mountain bike. The 185 mm rotors with their outstanding response ensure optimum braking power even in critical situations.

With DT SWISS X430 rims and double-butted DT SWISS spokes, the mountain bike's wheels provide a solid basis for efficient and comfortable use. The SRAMshift and drive components combine low weight with perfect shifting ease and high precision while being extremely robust. The excellent technical equipment of the bike is matched by the superior quality of its other components. Like the frame, the saddle post, handlebars and the stem are also by ADP. The innovative saddle from Allay includes special ergonomic features, such as an air cushion that is individually adjustable to the sensitive pressure points of men and women.

The price of the Mercedes-Benz mountain bike is €2,790 (incl. VAT, in Germany) and it is available from Mercedes-Benz dealers from May 2008. The bike is part of the Mercedes-Benz 2008 Bike Collection, which also includes the Fitness Bike, Trekking Bike and Racing Bike, as well as the Kids' Bike and the Folding Bike*.
